EHR Software

An Electronic Health Record - EHR Software - is an computer application that enables providers to keep electronic copies of a patient's chart. The software can be utilized less or more depending on the provider's interest and needs.

Some clinics have set up a basic chart that is used for storing dictation. Dragon Dictation is most commonly used. This can be an effective way to begin chart electronically in an EHR. However, the primary drawback is the lack of structure date. Much of the value of the reporting and decision support is lost when the data is stored as text blobs instead of discrete data elements.

More advanced users may use a blended approach. Specific, recurring information is entered in via templates, for example, the review of systems. Rather than writing or dictating out every item checked, the provider can work down through a checklist and indicate whether there was no issue or complaint or if there was something to note. In the latter case, the doctor may use dictation to capture their "color commentary" or the patient's story, which can be far more illuminating than the basic data.

Structured data can also be captured in the EMR softwares through interfaces. For example, the lab could sent the results electronically, resulting a longitudinal record that can be reported against or easily charted, for identifying trends and educating the patient.

Use the form above to identify EMR systems from a variety of vendors, specific to your area of practice and your priorities. Be sure to inquire about pricing, features, current customers, templates available, dication options, and implementation strategy.
